What is campaigning?
A campaign is simply a set of actions asking for something to change. It’s a fun, exciting, and powerful method of advocating for change; in this case, demanding that those responsible for the dire state of our rivers take action to fix them.
It can involve a variety of creative tactics including petitions, public demonstrations, media stunts, and political pressure.

Why campaign?
Years of poor regulation and neglect by the Environment Agency and Government has allowed water companies and intensive agriculture to freely pollute our rivers.

Mobilising support, increasing publicity, and effectively stirring up a storm, puts pressure on polluters, decision makers and stakeholders to enforce regulations or change practices to protect our rivers. It lets them know that this is an issue that the public cares about and that we won’t accept it.
Together, as river rescuers, we CAN push for change.
The power of community action is not to be underestimated, and is well demonstrated along the River Wye. What began with a few like-minded individuals raising awareness has led to a legal case against polluters, supported by thousands of people passionate about the river. This example shows that effective campaigning can make a difference, regardless of one’s background.
How can I do it?
First, it’s important to have a clear idea of the change you want to see and who has the power to make those changes. Define some clear objectives focused on what impact you want to see.

Plan your campaign
To get started, check our guide to planning a campaign (PDF) for further resources and information. Additionally, the resource centre provides a useful guide for planning and running a campaign and the Angling Trusts provides a great campaigning guide (PDF) too.
Gather support
Remember, the more numbers behind a message, the greater the pressure it creates! Working together is the key to rescuing our rivers. If you want to get involved with other passionate river rescuers, check our community map to join an existing group, or look at our set up a group section.
